Named after Sylvia Rivera, a Latina trans activist and a forerunner in the fight against gender identity discrimination, Rivera worked with homeless teenagers, cofounding (along with Marsha P. Johnson) the militant group and shelter STAR (Street Trans Action Revolutionaries) which offered services and advocacy for homeless queer youth and fought for the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act.
